In this sociolinguistics seminar, we will discuss the historical and contemporary applications of speech communities, communities of practice, perceptual communities, and digital communities, and how these intersect with theories in linguistic variation, social identity, , globalization, racialization, and mediatization. Furthermore, we will consider how social justice efforts in linguistics intersect with the ever-changing community boundaries around languages, varieties, and speakers/signers.
