Relationship between language, individual, and society in the context of the Spanish around the world, concentrating on Spanish varieties spoken in Spain and Latin America, including the United States, but will also give an overview of Spanish in Africa and other parts of the world. This is a Spanish dialectology course, where we will study how the Spanish language varies throughout the world. By using music, texts, corpora, and social media, we will analyze phonetic, morphosyntactic, and discourse/pragmatic variation. Students in this course will be trained in sociolinguistic data collection and analysis, in order to understand the structured nature of linguistic variation.
